SEO and GEO for small businesses in Southeast Asia
What do customers ask AI before they choose?
They ask specific questions with a product, a place, a budget or a need in them. Examples of questions we test for Southeast Asian SMEs:
- Which immigration consultancy in Singapore is reliable?
- Reliable renovation company in Singapore for a 4-room HDB
- Best aircon servicing company in Singapore with fair prices
- Reliable accounting firm for small businesses in Kuala Lumpur
- Recommended office cleaning company in Singapore
We test questions like these in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI, and record which businesses are named and which websites are used as sources.
What makes AI recommend a local business?
AI repeats what is clear, specific and confirmed by more than one source. These are the signals that matter most:
| Signal | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| A complete Google Business Profile | Correct name, address, hours, services, photos and regular reviews. Google’s AI features draw on the same Search systems |
| Service pages with prices | One page per service, with a starting price or price range and what is included |
| Location pages | Each branch or service area with address and areas covered, so “near me” questions find you |
| Reviews and mentions off your site | Google reviews, local directories, local media and “best of” lists that AI reads |
| Answers to common questions | How long it takes, how to book, guarantees, payment options |
| The customer’s language | English for most pages, plus Chinese pages if many customers are Chinese-speaking |
Google says AI features in Search use the same core systems as normal search, so a page must first be indexed and able to show a snippet (Google Search Central). Research on GEO found that adding statistics and cited sources raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40% in tests.
Quick self-check
Ask ChatGPT: “Which [your service] company in [your city] is reliable?” If your business is not named, look at the businesses that are, and at the websites the AI cites as sources: usually review sites, directories, local media and pages with clear prices. That gap is what GEO work closes.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO worth it for a small local business?
If your customers compare a few businesses before they buy, yes. AI answers usually name only a handful of businesses, so being one of them matters more than ranking tenth on Google.
Do I need SEO before GEO?
They work together, and every CitedAsia plan includes both. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear as a link in its AI features.
Which countries do you cover?
We are based in Singapore and work mostly with businesses in Singapore and Malaysia, and also across Southeast Asia online. We work in English and Mandarin.
How long until I see results?
Usually 4 to 12 weeks for first changes, and 3 to 6 months for steady results. We re-test the same questions every month.
