What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)? A plain-English guide for small businesses

By Dawn, Founder of CitedAsia · Updated October 2026 · 8-minute read

Short answer: GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of getting your business named and quoted in answers written by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It builds on SEO: your site must be easy to read, give direct answers with real numbers, and be mentioned by other trusted websites.

Key takeaways

  • AI tools now answer buying questions directly, and only name a few businesses.
  • GEO does not replace SEO. Google says AI features use the same core systems as Search.
  • Clear answers, statistics and sources make a page more likely to be quoted.
  • Expect first changes in 4 to 12 weeks, and track the same questions every month.

What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation: making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and recommend. A “generative engine” is any tool that writes an answer instead of showing a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, later accepted at the KDD 2024 conference. You may also hear AEO (answer engine optimisation), LLM SEO or AI SEO. They all describe the same goal.

Why does GEO matter now?

Because a large share of buying research has moved into AI tools, and an AI answer usually names only a handful of businesses. If you are not one of them, the customer may never see your website at all.

The numbers are large and still growing:

For a small business, this changes the question from “are we on page one of Google?” to “does AI mention us when a customer asks?”

How is GEO different from SEO and AEO?

SEO helps your page rank in a list of links. AEO helps it get picked as the featured answer. GEO helps your business get named inside an AI-written answer. Each one builds on the one before, and SEO is the foundation.

Google is clear that there is no secret trick. Its guide to AI features and your website says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Search.

How does AI decide which businesses to name?

AI tools search the web, read the pages they find, and repeat what is clear, specific and confirmed by several sources. They do not pay attention to slogans, and they cannot read what is hidden.

Google describes a “query fan-out” technique: the AI splits one question into several smaller searches across subtopics. A page that answers the main question and the follow-up questions (price, timing, who it suits, how to choose) has more chances to be picked.

The GEO research paper tested which edits help most. Adding statistics, quotations and cited sources raised a page’s visibility in AI answers by up to 40% in its tests, while stuffing keywords did little. That is an upper limit from a lab test, not a promise, but it shows what AI tools reward.

How do you do GEO? 6 steps for a small business

Start with what AI can read, then make each page answer real questions, then build proof on other websites.

Step 1: Test what AI says today

Write down 10 to 20 questions your customers really ask, such as “best kids’ dentist in Tampines” or “how much does a family tour to Japan cost from Singapore”. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record who gets named and which websites are cited.

Step 2: Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt file and your hosting firewall. Some hosts block bots like GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot by default. If they cannot read your site, nothing else matters.

Step 3: Put the answer first

Open each key page with 2 or 3 sentences that answer the main question directly, including your business name, location and a number. Use question-style headings, and keep each paragraph short enough to quote on its own.

Step 4: Add real numbers and proof

Prices or starting prices, years in business, number of customers served, delivery times. Link to official sources when you state a fact. Vague words like “best” and “leading” give AI nothing to repeat.

Step 5: Add structured data

Schema markup tells machines what your page is about: your organisation, services, prices and FAQs. It must match what visitors see on the page. Google’s rules say not to mark up anything that is not visible.

Step 6: Get mentioned on other trusted websites

AI trusts what several independent sources agree on. Complete your Google Business Profile, get listed in respected directories in your industry, and earn mentions in local media, review sites and “best of” lists.

Try it yourself

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask: “Which [your service] company in [your city] is reliable?” and “How much does [your service] cost in [your city]?” If your business is not named, look at who is, and at the websites the AI lists as sources. Those sources are usually where the gap is. Dawn, Founder

How long does GEO take?

Most businesses see the first changes in 4 to 12 weeks, and steady results in 3 to 6 months. Each type of fix moves at a different speed:

Type of workTypical time to show
Unblocking AI crawlers, fixing technical errors1 to 4 weeks
Rewriting pages answer-first, adding Schema2 to 8 weeks
New articles answering customer questions4 to 12 weeks
Mentions and listings on other websites2 to 6 months

These are typical industry ranges, not guarantees. AI answers also change from day to day, which is why we track the same set of questions every month instead of trusting one screenshot.

How much does GEO cost?

Published GEO retainers in Singapore mostly range from about SGD 1,500 to SGD 8,000 a month. CitedAsia’s one-time AI visibility audit costs USD 690, and our monthly GEO plans start at USD 1,200. If you are not ready to pay anything yet, start with our free AI visibility check.

Frequently asked questions about GEO

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Mostly, yes. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) are two names for the same goal: getting your business included in answers written by AI tools. Some people use AEO for featured snippets and voice answers, and GEO for AI chat answers.

Do I still need SEO if I do GEO?

Yes. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Search before it can appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. SEO is the foundation that GEO builds on.

How long does GEO take?

Most businesses see the first changes in 4 to 12 weeks. Technical fixes are picked up fastest. Mentions on other websites take longest, because AI tools have to find and re-read those sites.

Can I do GEO myself?

You can do the basics yourself: let AI crawlers read your site, answer customer questions at the top of each page, add real prices and numbers, and keep your Google Business Profile complete. Ongoing content, listings and monthly testing are where most small businesses need help.
